From September 19 to 21, 2024, the 19th Annual Meeting of the Polish Social Psychological Society took place, gathering around 250 participants, including a significant number of non-Polish speakers. A total of 41 symposia and sessions were organized as part of the congress. Half of the parallel sessions were conducted in English, highlighting the international nature of the event.
During the congress, lectures by prominent speakers were also held. Prof. Anjan Chatterjee, a distinguished neuroscientist from the University of Pennsylvania, delivered an inspiring lecture titled “Art, Architecture, and Human Wellbeing,” where he discussed the impact of art and architecture on human well-being.
Prof. Dariusz Doliński, a renowned social psychologist from SWPS University, presented his research in a lecture titled “The Avoidance-Avoidance Conflict as a Model for Explaining Obedience in the Milgram Paradigm,” offering a fresh perspective on Milgram’s classic experiments on obedience to authority.
Prof. Roland Imhoff from the University of Mainz shared his research on social categorization during his lecture “On Lumping and Splitting: What Determines How We Categorize Our Social Ecology?”.
The congress was accompanied by two exceptional workshops led by Prof. Anjan Chatterjee, a specialist in neuroscience and social psychology. Thanks to the support of the Metropolitan Science Support Fund, Prof. Chatterjee conducted workshops on “Human Beauty” and “Some Thoughts on Research Approaches and Writing Papers,” which attracted great interest from participants.
The congress program also included a fascinating plenary discussion titled “Social Psychology in Education,” moderated by doctoral candidate and early education textbook author, Karina Mucha, MA. Representatives from the fields of science and education participated in the discussion, facilitating an in-depth reflection on the role of social psychology in the educational process.
The winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award was Professor Mariola Łaguna (Catholic University of Lublin), while the winner of the Robert Zajonc Award was Dr. Marta Roczniewska (SWPS University).
Prior to the congress, the traditional two-day PSPS summer school took place, during which participants could attend three workshops: “What Comes After Ph.D.? Career Development Workshop” led by Dr. Mariola Paruzel-Czachura (Prof. UŚ), “Engaging Communities through Participatory Action Research” by Dr. Małgorzata Wójcik (Prof. USWPS), and “Developing Research Skills with Particular Emphasis on Research Planning Skills” led by Prof. Anjan Chatterjee.
As in previous years, the congress was sponsored by the Ariadna Research Panel, which funded the main prizes in the competitions for the best oral presentation and poster or BLITZ.
